Leila Leder-Kremer
Leila Leder-Kremer was born in Argentina in 1976 and graduated from the University of Design, Architecture and Urbanism in Buenos Aires, although Miami has been her home for the past few years. In 2007 she was honored by the South Florida Cultural Consortium with a prestigious Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists.
As an internationally-renowned artist, Leder-Kremer’s work has been exhibited in such diverse settings as Reykjavik, Iceland by The Icelandic Association of Visual Artists (SÍM), at the Circa International Art Fair in Puerto Rico and right here in South Florida at the Miami Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami.
Leder-Kremer discovered a love of Miami Beach through its tropical plants.
“I was fascinated by the complex shapes, colors and textures of South Florida’s vegetation,” she says. “I started meticulously documenting and studying the dramatic geometrical and organic shapes up close. Through close-up photography, these plants adopted new forms and with it, they became new objects with clear abstract appearance.”
The study became the photographic series Plants with Other Shapes, which Leder-Kremer explains was influenced by German Expressionism, with angles, shadows and overall aesthetic reminiscent of the black and white horror movie classics "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and "Nosferatu."
Printed manually in a darkroom, each of the images seen here is a unique print. For more of Leder-Kremer's work visit http://www.flickr.com/photos/leilaraceli/
