Kill Miss Pretty Wins Your Heart by Tearing it Out
By Dominick Scala
Say hello to the land of creepy, edgy, Candyland fun, where everyday is Halloween and nighttime is no exception: it’s the world of Kill Miss Pretty. South Florida locals KMP are tearing the ass out of your so called rock ’n’ roll, making waves, getting themselves on most every festival that comes through the Sunshine State and attracting various labels’interest. KMP is the birth of a triad featuring Miss Alicia Olink, Russ Rogers (The Numb Ones), and Martin Davis (Stuck on Evil). Embracing the drum machine, they blend the fine herbs of sex, electro-pop, jagged guitars, punk, a mouthful of fun and oh, yes — some synthesized spook you can cut a rug to. KMP will take the stage at the reopened Legendary Squeeze (original stomping grounds of the Spooky Kids themselves) on Feb. 20. I caught up with Olink and Rogers to get the deal on what’s in the works, and the show in those hallowed halls.
So the new single “Judy Garland” is fantastic by the way. Does this mean we can expect an album soon?
Alicia Olink: Yeah it’s just one single for now, the album will be done by the summer.
Whom did you record with?
Russ Rogers: We were approached by these engineer/producer guys Adam Bailvic and Gustav Joseph. They wanted to test out their new studio and they had an interest in us, so we went for it, and got to play with all their cool gear. The song took a while but we recruited Daisy Berkowitz for some layered eeriness and we are all really happy with it.
Wasn’t Daisy in one of your videos as well?
Rogers: Yep, it’s called “Drawing Pictures of Haunted Houses with You.” That was our first video actually, off our CD “Permission for Strange.” Daisy is the fortune-teller peering into his crystal ball.
Are you thinking of making him a permanent KMP fixture?
Rogers: I don’t think so, that’s not the plan. He played with Martin in Stuck on Evil so they have some good history. It’s cool because he was here last week and he gave me two of the original four-track/ drum tracks from the Manson and the Spooky Kid demos. So were going to do two Spooky Kids songs using those original tracks at the Squeeze show. It’s going to be veeeery interesting!
What’s in the future for KMP? A label perhaps?
Rogers: Well this an all-consuming project. Were not actively looking for anything in particular but we’re open for anything. But little things are happening here and there so who knows. The goal is just to have fun and it always seems that once other people get involved things tend to get tainted.
How about your live shows? And you seem to be getting tons of press!
Rogers: Our shows are great, more and more, we’re getting put on festivals lineups — Moon Fest, Loco Fest with Mudvayne, The New Times’ Artopia, all the beer fests and whatnot. People seem to think were ‘Fest Worthy’ (laughs). And yeah, we have been on the cover of three mags in the last ten months.
Any last words?
Rogers: Yeah. We also wanted to add that we’re really pleased with how our lesbian and gay following has grown over the last year or so. They seem to "get us" and we relate and appreciate their enthusiasm.
Conjure up some sexy fun with KMP at 10 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Squeeze (Sea Monster), Two S. New River Drive, West, Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-767-6200 or visit killmisspretty.com for all of the wretched details.
